After losing his 2nd ever professional MMA fight in 2013, Usman went on an incredible 19-fight win streak, which included 15 UFC wins and 5 title defences in the welterweight division. He held the title from 2019 until 2022, when he lost to Leon Edwards by last-minute head kick KO. Since then, he lost the rematch against Edwards and was then defeated by middleweight championship contender Khamzat Chimaev.
Joaquin Buckley
Buckley lost his UFC debut to Kevin Holland and originally fought in the middleweight division, where he won 5 and lost 4. Since he moved down to welterweight, however, he’s gone on a 6-fight win streak, stopping Andre Fialho, Vincente Luque, Stephen Thompson and Colby Covington. He’s now 11-4 in the UFC, with 71% of his wins by KO/TKO and has worked his way up to 7th in the division rankings.
Rose Namajunas
Although Rise lost in the Ultimate Fighter series 20 final, she went on a run of 4 wins, including 3 submission victories, and 1 loss before challenging for the strawweight title. She won the title for the first time in 2017. Although she lost her title to Jessica Andrade in 2019, she would go on to avenge her loss before KOing the champion Weili Zhang. However, she then lost her title once more and moved to flyweight, where she has won 2 and lost 2.
Miranda Maverick
Maverick entered the UFC in 2020 and since her debut has won 8 while losing 3. She’s now on a run of 4 straight wins, including an armbar win over Priscila Cachoeira. 47% of her wins have come by way of submission, and she’s never been finished by her opponent. She’s currently ranked 11th in the women’s flyweight division, and her full professional MMA record is 15-5.
Based on the fact that he’s now on a 3-fight losing streak, Usman is the MMA odds underdog for this match. While he was one of the most dominant champions in UFC history, Usman is now 38 and has had multiple surgeries, which will impact his performances. He looked hesitant in the majority decision loss against Edwards, and it’s possible that the KO affected him too. However, he gave Chimaev real problems despite stepping in at short notice at middleweight.
Buckley looks stronger than ever since he moved down to the welterweight division. He was always talented, but struggled to be consistent at middleweight. Now he has 6 wins, including 4 stoppages, although they’ve mostly been against older fighters.
After losing her strawweight belt for the second time in an extremely low activity fight, Namajunas moved up to flyweight, where she has struggled to make an impact. The former 2-time champion looks small for the weight class and has also been hesitant to throw her strikes properly. Despite that, she’s the favourite for this fight, with oddsmakers believing she still has enough to beat Maverick.
Maverick has some decent wins on her record, but she’s struggled to make an impact when facing tough opposition. Interestingly, this will be her first UFC fight where she wasn’t the favourite according to the UFC odds. Could her submission skills prove the difference maker in the fight?
