What is Ligue 2?
Ligue 2 is the second tier of football in France, similar to the Championship in England. It sits directly below Ligue 1, with a promotion and relegation system that sees up to 3 teams swap places at the end of the season. It was established in 1933, and together with the top flight, makes up the Ligue de Football Professionnel system in the country.
Ligue 2 table and standings explained
Ligue 2 is made up of 18 teams, who all play each other twice throughout the season - once home and once away. Teams receive 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw, and none for a loss. At the end of the season, the points total decides where teams finish. If two or more teams have the same points totals, goal difference will then decide who finishes top, and head-to-head record if they are still level.

Ligue 2 fixtures, dates and results
The Ligue 2 fixtures were released on June 10, and the season kicked off on August 8, with all 18 teams playing. The division will come to a close with all 18 teams playing simultaneously on May 21.
Once the regular season is completed, the playoffs will begin to determine who will appear in the promotion decider. Ligue 1 concludes on May 29, when 16th place will be confirmed and will get ready to play in the final.
How the Ligue 2 season works: promotion, relegation and playoffs
After 34 games played each, the top 2 teams in the Ligue 2 standings are promoted directly to the top flight, while teams in 3rd to 5th qualify for the promotion/relegation playoff. This sees the winner of the Ligue 2 playoff compete against the team in 16th in Ligue 1.
The 2 teams that finish bottom of the Ligue 2 table will be relegated to Ligue 3, which was formerly known as the Championnat National. The side in 16th will then have to face the winner of the Ligue 3 playoff to avoid relegation.

Ligue 2 lost 4 teams to Ligue 1 and the newly named Ligue 3 in 2025-26, with Troyes and Les Mans going up as champions and runners-up, respectively. Unfortunately, Bastia and Amiens were relegated, though Stade Lavallois managed to survive their relegation playoff.
Saint-Étienne were forced to face another year outside of the top division when they lost in the playoffs to rivals Nice, while Metz and Nantes would be relegated from the top flight. Ligue 2 would welcome Dijon and Sochaux into the fold as they were promoted.
