What is the PGA Championship?
The PGA Championship is one of the four major men’s golf tournaments taking place over the course of the golf season. Like the Open, the Masters and the US Open, it’s held every year and sees the very best golfers in the world competing for a chance to be crowned champion. However, unlike the other tournaments, this event is exclusively for professional players.
It’s organised by the Professional Golfer’s Association of America, and since it was first held, the PGA Championship has been hosted at venues all across the United States of America. Winning the PGA Championship is an exclusive honour in its own right, but champions also receive invitations to all four majors for the next five years.
History of the PGA Championship
In the early days of golf in the United States, the sport was mostly played by wealthy amateurs rather than professionals. Two unofficial national championships were held at the same time, one at Newport Country Club in Rhode Island and the other at Saint Andrew’s Golf Club in New York. Saint Andre’s also held an Open championship for amateur and professional golfers. However, in 1894, the United States Golf Association was set up as the first formal golf organisation in the country, leading to the sports professional development.
In 1916, the Professional Golfers Association of America was established, and the first PGA Championship was held that same year at Siwanoy Country Club in Bronxville, New York. The first ever PGA Champion, Jim Barnes, received a diamond-studded gold medal along with $500 in prize money.
Since then, there have been 73 winners of the PGA Championship. Jack Nicklaus and Walter Hagen hold the joint record for the most wins at 5 titles each, while the current champion is Xander Schauffele.
Format & Schedule of PGA Championship 2025?
Every year, the PGA Championship begins in May. Unlike the other biggest golf majors, which are open to all golfers, the PGA Championship has strict requirements for qualification.
Up to 156 players may enter the tournament, including former PGA Champions, winners of the last 5 majors and the top 3 in the official World Golf Ranking. In addition, the 70 leaders in the PGA Championship points list qualify for the tournament.
The tournament consists of 72 holes, which are played over multiple rounds. The first 2 rounds are played over 2 courses, after which the field is cut. The top 90 players enter the third round, and then the top 70 players go into the final round.
At the end of the 72 holes, the golfer with the lowest score wins. However, if there’s a tie, a 3-hole aggregate playoff determines the champion.
When & Where are the 2025 PGA Championship?
The 2025 PGA Championship will be held at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, between 12 May and 18 May.
