The Philippine Cup is different from the Governors’ Cup and the Commissioner’s Cup - the other two PBA conferences - because the Philippine Cup is only open to Filipino players.
History of the Philippine Cup?
The first year of the Philippine Cup was 1975. However, it wasn’t until 1977 that foreign players were exempt from participating. In the history of the tournament, only two teams have ever won it three straight years, earning the right to keep the Jun Bernardino Trophy permanently. The TNT Tropang Texters and the San Miguel Beermen are the only two to accomplish this feat.
PBA Philippine Cup Schedule & Format?
The Philippines Cup typically begins in late February or early March and ends in mid-June. There are 12 teams in the PBA, meaning 12 teams compete in the PBA Philippine Cup. The first stage of the tournament is a true round-robin, meaning each team will play 11 games, playing every other team once. After those 11 games, the top eight teams advance to the playoffs.
In the playoffs, the top 2 seeds are matched up against the bottom 2 seeds in the quarterfinals. To advance, the bottom 2 seeds must win twice while only one win in the first two games of the series will allow the top seeds to advance. Meanwhile, the other two series between the 3-6 seeds are best-of-3. Both the semifinals and the finals of the Philippine Cup are a best-of-7 series.
